5 Reasons Homeschooling Wins

The latest study concerning homeschooling-
Source: http://www.nheri.org/research/research-facts-on-homechooling.html

1. The home-educated typically score 15 to 30 percentile points above public-school students on standardized academic achievement tests.

2. Whether homeschool parents were ever certified teachers is not related to their children’s academic achievement.

3. Degree of state control and regulation of homeschooling is not related to academic achievement.

4. The home-educated are doing well, typically above average, on measures of social, emotional, and psychological development. Research measures include peer interaction,
self-concept, leadership skills, family cohesion, participation in community service, and self-esteem.

5. The research base on adults who were home educated is growing; thus far it indicates that they:

participate in local community service more frequently than does the general population,
go to and succeed at college at an equal or higher rate than the general population,

by adulthood, internalize the values and beliefs of their parents at a high rate.

The Challenge

When we decided to start homeschooling our 3 youngest children, so many people said, "Are you crazy?", "You will regret it!", "You're not qualified!", "What are you thinking?" There were several reasons that we decided to begin this adventure in education, which I will not into great detail about. But once we decided to do it , we went for it! Our kids were challenged in the beginning, mostly because of having to switch from their German language of learning to English. The other major challenge was not having the usual routine of waking up early, making a lunch and sitting in a very structured class all day with a room full of what was mostly unruly kids.

The Reward

However, after our kids got into the swing of things, they have flourished immensely! They no longer have issues concerning bullying, difficult testing and being left behind in a challenging subject. Their self esteem has grown and they have much more confidence in their abilities in all areas of their lives! It has been challenging as a mom and a teacher to implement the consistency, patience and sometimes knowledge (forcing me to re-learn Math)...But I know that it was and is the right decision when it comes to our childrens' lives and self image. They no longer need to worry about who has the most fashionable clothes, who's the smartest or coolest kid in the classroom. Or if their hair is in perfect place. (I mean, who doesn't want to do school in PJs?) They can be confident in knowing that they are strong, smart, beautiful, unique individuals that can hold their heads up high and stand their ground... to be who they were meant to be and not what a school, teachers or other students tell them what they should be or must be. It was one of the biggest gifts that we have been able to give to our children.

Blessings Abundant

Our oldest homeschooler graduated last year with honors and went on to her newest adventure, YWAM (Youth With A Mission). And our two youngest, still at home are enjoying personalized learning while being able to travel to different places where they are learning culture and history IN PERSON in addition to what they are learning in their books.

Homeschooling your kids might not be something for you. But however you choose to bless your kids in boosting their self-esteem and confidence, will be one of the greatest gifts you can give! It will last a lifetime and is worth whatever sacrifice you are willing to put forth!
